Truman DoctrineThe Truman Doctrine is a US foreign policy created in the wake of the Cold War by President Harry S. Truman on March 12th 1947. This doctrine is equivalent to a call to arms decreed by the US as a combatant towards the Soviet Union and Communism in general. The purpose of this doctrine was to contain Communism and prevent it from further influencing any nations. This doctrine has been implemented in the aid of the Greece and Turkey crisis, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Analysis: Truman believed that Communism jeopardized the integrity of Democracy and therefore wished to keep it away from the world. The doctrine was used to contain and combat the spread of Communist beliefs. Since many influential parts of the world like much of Western Europe were allies of the US, the Truman Doctrine was widely accepted. With the help of these powerful allies the US was able to contain Communism and keep it at a minuscule level. |
Analysis of the Truman Doctrine (excerpt)
Truman uses propaganda and other appeals to convince the audience (house of representatives) to help Greece and Turkey regain peace. He utilizes trump words like hope, freedom, peace, starvation, and suffering to further persuade the readers to intervene in the situation involving the Soviets. Those words represent the values of America so by stressing them Truman is indirectly saying that if you don't help those people you are going against the American way and allowing Communism to win.
